Background Checks: An Overview for Tribal Organizations

Duration: 1 – Hour (depending on learning style)

Audience:
Tribal leadership, Human Resources teams, public safety and law enforcement executive teams, school administrative teams, school board members, tribal healthcare clinics and healthcare administrators, child welfare and foster care staff, background investigators, administrative professionals, and others involved in background investigations and personnel security processes.

Course Overview:
This training provides a foundational understanding of background checks within Tribal organizations and programs. Participants will gain insight into the laws, policies, and standards that guide background investigation and adjudication processes, including their connection to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, Indian Country Law Enforcement Regulations, and the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA).

The session introduces the essential responsibilities of those involved in personnel security and offers practical context for how background checks protect Tribal communities, safeguard children, and ensure the integrity of Tribal programs.

Background Checks – An Overview also serves as a prerequisite for PSC’s three online courses on Conducting Compliant Background Investigations. By completing this training, participants will be prepared to engage more deeply with investigation and adjudication standards while strengthening their role in protecting the communities they serve.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and importance of background checks in protecting Tribal communities and programs.
  • Identify the key laws and regulations that guide background investigations, including the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, Indian Country Law Enforcement Regulations, and the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA).
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of those who oversee or support background investigations and adjudications.
  • Recognize how background checks contribute to safeguarding children, maintaining compliance, and upholding community trust.
  • Prepare to advance into PSC’s specialized courses on Conducting Compliant Background Investigations.


Certification:
Participants will receive a certificate of completion. Some courses may include a final exam (passing score: 75%).
